Concept: Communication is one of our daily tasks; it is an essential part of our life. However misunderstanding, confusion, interruption and interferences occur all the time, breaking it down and making it more and more difficult. Through this project we want to explore this break down in communication in modern society.
This was the choreography project at CSM in 2009, and it was also the first time I used the elements of physical theatre and filmed images to create a work. For a long time, I am very interested on this subject of “the ineffective communication in our mundane daily life.” For me, I started among the literary works of interest to find the starting point of my creation. So I found an inspiration from Pessoa1's poem “I am Tired.” From the idea of his poem to convey the invalid communication in this performance, and then extended the concept to the image design and the choreography.
In the concept of projection and live performer, we split them into two characters- a woman in the film and a man on the stage. Unfortunately, they have reached the end of their relationship. Although the dialogue between each other they tried, but they still could not find an emotional/ psychological balance for maintaining their relationship. So in the end, their final result is the collapse.
In terms of the actual rehearsal process, this is a length of about 5 minutes of the show and it is not long at all, thus we carried out shooting and editing images in advance, and then use the image as the basis to rehearsal with.
On the screen, a huge size of the projection is what I want to emphasise upon. When the large size image was projected onto the stage, the viewer 's experience will be much different from their previous visual perception and therefore push more sensory stimulation, which is what the creators wanted to convey. To further exaggerate the emotional intensity or tension through the performance.
At the same time, it was in this work that I tried to take into account the direction of the image for the very first time. That is to say there is a movement of the text in the projection, and the actor's body could have an simultaneous response with the flowing text, which is from bottom to top. Because the flow of the text, the corresponding body movement occurs. Through dialogue and interaction with the images, I completed the work assigned with Petya.
